There are lottery promotions, and then there are lottery promotions that are guaranteed to engineer increased sales. One such example is the innovative approach taken by the Illinois Lottery to provide incentives for lottery players to play lottery games and take their losing tickets to enter a sweepstakes to win spectacular prizes.
Called the Set for Life promotion, the game is predicated on lottery players sending the lottery $30 worth of losing lottery tickets from a list of eligible games. Each week, over 16 weeks, players who submitted the required tickets were entered into a second-chance drawing. The winner from each of the 16 weekly drawings received a golden coin, which they were to bring to the Grand Finale event, where they learned which prizes they won. Winners of the Grand Prize were guaranteed to win $100,000 a year for life, the cash equivalent of a new leased car every year for life, or the cash equivalent of a fabulous vacation every year for life.
“We are always looking for ways to give our lottery sales a boost, and we worked with GTECH to arrive at the Set for Life promotion as a way to get the sales lift we needed,” said Carolyn Adams, Superintendent of the Illinois Lottery. “We are extremely pleased with the results we achieved with the Set for Life promotion.”
The Illinois Set for Life promotion was built around several qualifying games, including The Money Game, Bucks For Your Bills, The Game of Life, Nest Egg, Decades of Dollars, $72 Million Cash Blast and includes all Pick n' Play™ tickets purchased between April 17, 2006 and September 1, 2006. The final drawing was held on September 30th.
